How to Structure a Personal Brand Website for Humans and Search

A personal website is both a home page and a small knowledge base. Its structure should let a visitor understand the person quickly while giving search engines a clear map of the site's important pages.

The homepage

Use the homepage to answer the basic questions: who is this, what do they build, what work can I see, and how can I contact them? Keep the main message focused.

The about page

An about page can provide context that does not fit the homepage: background, interests, tools, goals and links to relevant public profiles. Keep claims factual and update the page as the person changes.

Projects and case studies

A project page is stronger when it explains the problem, the solution, the technology and the outcome. Screenshots, demos and source links can make the page useful even to visitors who never contact you.

The blog

The blog should be organized around real topics related to the person's work. A category structure can help when there are enough articles to justify it, but a small site should not create dozens of empty category pages.

Internal linking

Every important page should have a path from another useful page. Link articles to relevant projects and link projects back to the article that explains a technique when that connection helps the reader.
